Bereavement leave is paid leave for an employee following the death of an immediate family member. Bereavement leave is granted at the time of the bereavement to give the employee time off from work.
The arrangements for Bereavement Leave are set out in the Civil Service Circular 01/2017 and following HQ Directive 31/2019, they also apply to Garda Members.
The current bereavement leave for close family members is as follows:
Death of a spouse or co-habiting partner, or a child – 20 working days
Death of immediate relatives including father, mother, step-father, step-mother, brother, sister, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, mother-in-law, father-in-law, grandmother, grandfather, grandchild – 5 working days
Other relatives including uncle, aunt, niece, or nephew – 1 day
