May: Skin Cancer Awareness Month
The Importance of Skin Cancer Awareness:
As the warmer months arrive, it's important for our personnel to prioritise their wellbeing, particularly regarding the prevention and awareness of skin cancer. Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, and its rates are on the rise globally. However, with proper education and protective measures, it remains one of the most preventable forms of cancer.
Understanding Skin Cancer:
Skin cancer develops when skin cells undergo mutations, most often due to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources such as tanning beds. There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. While basal and squamous cell carcinomas are more common and generally less dangerous, melanoma can be life threatening if not detected early.
Given the outdoor duties often associated with policing, it is essential for An Garda Síochána's personnel to be aware of the risks associated with prolonged sun exposure.
